Talent -a brief conversation with my supervisor-

Two days ago, I had a short converstion with my supervisor. I had to ask him about status of PhD in USA. Generally speaking, PhD in USA is good choice. It enhance job opportunity, your knowledge and salary. In addition, PhD can receive financial support during their PhD.

In Japan, PhD cannot receive any financial support, no job opportunity and no increase of salary. The saraly which PhD holders can have in Japan is the same as the ordinary person who are employed in the company and promoted at a regular rate. So, no motivative environment for PhD candidate.

I graduated from No2 high school in Kyushu. Fortunately my current supervisor admitted me as a good student, but I saw many students who were far better than I was.

6 years have passed since I leave the high school. On of the most surprising thing for me was that only a few student kept their motivation as a scientist. I am really disappointed. Because if I could have talent like them, I could fight the histry of human beings like Dr. Kanamori or Dr. Jordan, the greatest scientist. I spoke it with my supervisor. He said,

"Well, sometimes, talented students have bad choice. For example, one of my firend in MIT, he was far better than I, told me that he might be better than I, but he had no motivation. He did not PhD and seemed to get chance to make his talent best. Motivation or "heat of stomach" is also necessary for their talent."

Well, I had to feel my fortunate that I found something I really want to do. I think I had to appriciate my fortunate!

Later, I e-mailed him like
"Well, I think I do not have talent like Dr. Kanamori , Dr. Aki or Dr. Jordan, but I think my passion to the hydrothermal system & seismology is as much as they have on their research, or more. I think that is the most important thing.

Thanks a lot,

"

He replied,

"Run,

Few have those types talents

Fortunately, passion is a talent too. And, as one talented man said, science is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration.
