When I was a high school student, I could not imagine that I work as a seismologist. Fortunately, I really like current research.
"Earthquakes" relate to the disaster mitigation. Therefore, the extent of knowledge sometimes affect lives of people. Knowledge can save or kill people.
The 2010 Chilean earthquake remind me of the responsibility as an expert. Of course, my knowledge of seismology and tsunami is limited as a PhD student. However, I feel the gap of knowledge from people who are not familiar with this topic. I do not think I will work on something about disaster mitigation in the future. Some times responsibility to me as aa expert must be required. I felt I should be aware of it.
Some experts do not want to take responsibility which relate to natural disaster. Natural disasters are not caused by human beings. However, I still think I would like to gain knowledge as an expert though knowledge of human beings on nature is limited.
Even some world class experts of volcanologists are often killed by volcanic gas or eruptions. On the other hands, our efforts have been contributing disaster mitigation. I hope to be an expert who can take accountability at least.
