These days, the society is rapidly changing. The speed of change seems to be maximum in information technologies. I would like to write about the changes which I met before.
1) Monitor
When I was a junior high school student, my parent bought a computer to me. If my memory is correct, the monitor was 16 inch CRT. I could not see the monitor more than a few hours. At the time, office have only one PC which had a large monitor (~22 inch). It costs $1000 at the time. If I look back the quality of huge monitors at the time, they are better than the monitor which I had. However, we can buy much better LED monitors less than $200 these days. Office workers often have two monitors. Selling PC without monitor is not so strange any more because people already have good monitors.
I noticed that 3D TV is on sale these days. I imagine that every body enjoy 3D movies at home someday though the cost is still very expensive.

2) Digital camera
My father majored chemistry. When he was young, employment of film maker is one of the best job for them. These days, as you know, business of film has collapsed. Japanese camera maker decided to stop develop new film camera in 2005.
When I was junior high school student, digital cameras were rare items. However, price of them was decreasing and it finally installed in cell phones. I could not imagine digital camera would terminate film camera because the quality of picture is much better than digital camera. I guess that films are still better than digital photos. On the other hand, digital camera is much more useful except for quality of pictures.
3) Internet
From my point of view, it actually promote installation of PC for every home. Once upon a time, internet cost a lot and slow. Connecting internet was as expensive as using telephone. Now, if you pay a few ten dollars, you are not necessary to worry how long do you use the internet.
4) Skype
I should have know this earlier. In my opinion, this is one of the most influential techniques accompanied by the internet. This enable us to use "television call" for FREE. High speed internet enable us to dream technology beyond expectation. If you obtain iPod touch and WiFi environment, you can use iPod touch as regular phone because you can use Skype with iPod touch. You can even buy your online phone number so that your friends can
I guess it may cheaper than regular cell phone though access is comparatively limited. I feel that using Skype with iPod touch is between regular phone and cell phone.
Unfortunately, it also deteriorate international telephone call. On the other hand, it actually promote international collaboration. Member of our laboratory often use skype to work with people live in other states or other countries.

When I was a child, I do not like change of society. The more I grown up, the more I notice that the change of society is inevitable. We need to accept it. When I was a junior high school student, limited number of people used PC. However, the number of people who use PC were increasing when I was a high school student. When I was a undergrad student, all students used PC. In the mid 90's, even people who like PC did not think that every family have PC. Currently, everybody has their own PC.
