Engineering and Science

These are often addressed as almost similar things. In fact, a few professor of my former department obtained PhD in science departments. Technology must be based on science. Therefore, Japanese sometimes do not distinguish them though there is clear line between science "and" technology.

Scientists often does not care the contribution of the society. The purpose of engineering is use scientific knowledge practically. Therefore, value of science is not consistent with the value of technology. For example, research of science deal with the year and size of volcano. However, that do not make any sense for development of geothermal energy. As engineering, they consider location of hot water, and its storage in very limited scale and do not consider the age or origin of hydrothermal system though it is often discussed by scientists. Therefore, major field of scientists and engineers are often different though both of the area is close to each other.

As academia, both of science and technology have common part. The advancement must be based on publications. If you read some professional journals, you must see a lot of references. In order to make advancement of science or engineering as an academic area, reading lot of paper, and research based on the previous studies are necessary. The custom have been continued for a long time. These days, the process become very strict and evaluation of Japanese graduate students are very strict. If they cannot submit paper until the end of 1 year of master degree, they cannot expect scholarship during their 3 years of PhD *1.

If you want to do science or technology almost like an amateur, you are not necessary to care the difference of science and technology because such researches does not may any sense for advancement of both of academia. However, if you try to do what your are doing seriously, the border disappear.

*1:Japanese PhD is 3 years after 2 years of master course. There is almost no scholar ship for graduate students in Japan.
